Create a Beautiful Mompreneur Home Office Space…With Kids Around

Share

Whether your home office space is for paying bills or operating a business, Mompreneurs who work from home may find it challenging especially with children around.   Time management and discipline to complete tasks will be more comfortable when organized.  Boundaries, both figuratively and physically, are the building blocks for success, especially under one roof.

Tips to Create Your Beautiful and Functional Mompreneur Home Office Space

#1  Create Your Dedicated Workspace

mompreneuer-home-office-san ramonConducting business and staying focused at your home office can be tricky. Your home office workspace should convey a clear purpose.  The best option is to design a dedicated area that is quiet, with good lighting and a door.  However, like me, you may not have that luxury. My home office space is in the kitchen.  It may not be your ideal place, but it allows me to keep a general pulse on the household.  I also share my computer with other family members, so functionality becomes the priority.  Paint is an inexpensive option to bring color and inspiration into your space.  Consider painting an accent wall or repainting the desk or chair with a favorite accent color.

I designed my work area on a budget to be functional.  Furniture consignment stores are popping up everywhere and can save a boatload of money over buying new.  I paid a fraction of the cost for my desk, 2-drawer filing cabinet, and chair.

Another great place to find bargains is using Nextdoor, an app for your smartphone that operates as a virtual bulletin board. You register for your neighborhood, and you’ll see what your neighbors are selling, need, or report.  A great way to connect with your neighbors and build leads for your business.

#2  Comfortable Chair

The chair you choose should be comfortable but with no wheels.  There is less chance the kids will find it a play toy.  As a Mompreneur, you wear many hats to operate your home and home business.  I suggest a chair without arms for easy in/out access.

#3  Calendar and Clock

mompreneuer-san-ramonKeep your calendar up to date whether you use a desk or mobile calendar to stay on top of both work and family activities lest you’ll find yourself double booked.  Above all, place a clock in your space to help keep you on track and on time.

#4  Proper Lighting

#5  Regularly Declutter

home-office-declutterSchedule 10 minutes at the end of the day to declutter your home office workspace.  Clutter can influence the way you work.  Being too disorganized competes for your attention making it challenging to complete tasks.

#6  Prioritize Your Workflow

Maintaining strong organizational skills can reduce the chance of developing poor work habits such as procrastination, clutter, miscommunication, and inefficiency.  Staying organized can save time and money.  Organizational skills are essential for multitasking and keeping your business running smoothly and successfully.  Consistently achieving results is the goal even when unforeseen delays or problems arise.

#7  Add An Inspirational Quote or Affirmation

work-from-home-san-ramonAs a Mompreneur, some days you’re a superhero but not every day goes as planned.  Whether managing the kids and household or making million dollar deals, positive encouragement affirms why you chose to work at home.  Place your favorite inspirational quote or affirmation in your home office space for positive reinforcement.  As a bonus, I’ve compiled 30 of my favorite affirmations for you to download.  Select the statement that speaks to you and create a background to make it your own.

#8  Give Everything a Home

mompreneuer-home-office-san-ramonTo keep your space clean and organized, everything on your desk or stored in a drawer needs a ‘home’ where it stays when not in use.  Contain pens and markers in a cup or drawer out of reach of the kids.  Pens have a way of growing legs and walking away.  Items that can stay out of sight in a drawer until needed are a stapler, paperclips, and tape dispenser among other smaller items.  Organize working projects in folders, binders, or boxes.

#9  Storage or Shelving

Storage space out of kids’ reach is always a bonus!  Get creative with shelving.  Again, make sure objects on the shelves are relevant.  Keep decorations to a minimum.  Stylish storage boxes are another option to hold extra office supplies, books, or projects.  A letter-size box for mail will keep your essential correspondence in one place ready for you to open and sort.

#10  Charging Station

Your home office business needs may include multiple devices which require charging. A multi-plug strip will provide a central location for all your battery-operated devices. Even better, is a compact charging station that will centralize all instruments in one place.  Find both on Amazon.com along with many other options.  Click on the picture above for a direct link.
